Bike Response Team

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ is a community in itself. With over 12 million square feet of facilities and 265 buildings, USFPD maintains jurisdiction across a vast area. The USF Tampa campus covers about 2.5 square miles, while USF St. Petersburg is just under one square mile—totaling more than 1,600 acres combined.

The Bike Response Team (BRT) is a vital component of the department’s proactive and reactive policing strategy, providing swift and fluid mobility for agile and effective responses across campus. Led by the Special Operations Captain, the unit includes a Sergeant as well as sworn officers and trained civilian members from the Community Service Officer (CSO) unit.

Designed for agility and visibility, BRT personnel wear specialized uniforms and safety gear, including helmets, gloves, and glasses, ensuring readiness in a variety of environmental conditions. Team members ride industry-standard Cannondale patrol bikes, equipped with lights, sirens, and storage bags for maximum utility.

When not assigned to specific calls for service, BRT officers often perform visible patrols around campus. The unit is regularly activated to assist public safety efforts during large-scale events such as:

Presidential campaigns, Conventions, and rallies
Demonstrations and Protests
The City of Tampa’s iconic Gasparilla Parade
The Super Bowl and USF Athletic events
Community-wide engagements such as 5k runs, and the annual Homecoming Parade

BRT assignments are physically and mentally demanding. Members must complete 32 to 40 hours of specialized training, including modules in:

Crowd response and control
Basic medical aid for large events
Tactical bike operations

All riders must earn certification from the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA) and/or the Law Enforcement Bicycle Association (LEBA). New members are welcome to apply to join the team each year.
