Crime Prevention
Overview
Crime prevention is a key part of the mission of the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Police Department to keep a safe and healthy environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Crime Prevention Unit is essential in educating the campus community through awareness campaigns, interactive programs, and safety resources.
Led by the Special Operations Captain, the unit includes a Sergeant, a Corporal, and civilian staff who work closely with the Criminal Investigations Section (CIS) to prevent theft and protect personal property.
The unit is highly involved across campus, offering workshops on topics such as Active Threat Response, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), Emergency Preparedness, and Personal Safety. Through our Be-SMART program, we deliver tailored educational sessions that encourage proactive thinking and sound decision-making in situations where poor judgment could lead to costly outcomes.
Every year, the unit collaborates with USF Emergency Management and various campus and local agencies to host Safety Day, a large event centered on emergency preparedness and personal safety awareness.
Crime prevention goes beyond campus borders. The unit collaborates with partner agencies—including TPD, HCSO, TTPD, PCSO, and local businesses—to promote a safer regional community. Through outreach programs and community engagement, the team keeps an open dialogue about safety concerns and encourages a shared sense of responsibility.
